The Story Behind Our Mission

Dance Walking Fool was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Boca Raton, Florida, in November 2021 by Marianne Murphy, an HCI Certified Health Coach who is also certified in Mental Health First Aid. Dance Walking Fool provides suicide prevention education informed by lived experience to parents, students in grades 6 through 12, university students, first responders, and veterans. Founder Marianne Murphy survived her own suicide attempts at age 21, while she was a college student.

Dance Walking Fool and Marianne Murphy were recently cast for the TV show "Inside Success: America's Authors" to highlight the nonprofit's social impact in suicide prevention and to help debunk the long-held myths that have hindered progress in improving suicide statistics. In the United States, suicide is the number one cause of death for people ages 10 to 34. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 2,500 to 3,000 children ages 10 to 17 die by suicide each year, compared to 500 to 600 deaths from childhood cancer.

Dance Walking Fool currently offers peer support training and SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) education programming for students in grades 6 through 12. The organization plans to pursue funding and collaboration with early education and child development specialists to expand age-appropriate programming to the elementary school level by 2028.

Marianne E. Murphy

"We can no longer ignore the statistics or the fallacy of identifying risk in people suffering from suicidal ideation. From a lived experience perspective, I can tell you we hide it. We put on a mask so as not to burden our loved ones. We have also been taught that the subject of suicide is taboo. It is the most stigmatized symptom of mental illness. By not talking about it, we are increasing overall risk. By placing the burden of detection on loved ones, we are exacerbating complicated grief and increasing loss survivors' own risk of suicide threefold. It is time to remove this cornerstone from suicide prevention education, as we have multi-decade statistical proof that it is not working. Lived experience needs to be at the table with clinicians and academia for policy, programming, research, and treatment best practices. Lived experience is the missing component in the tireless work clinicians and academics have done. Together, we can do better, improve statistical outcomes, and become stigma-free," says Marianne Murphy.
